We use mini-bioreactor arrays (MBRA) to study the ecological dynamics of simple to complex gut microbiota communities. MBRAs are also useful in defining the probiotic potential of commensal gut bacteria.
Our group use gnotobiotic animal models to understand the effect of gut macrobiota/pathogen colonization on host. We use germfree mouse and pig as the primary models for human microbiota studies. We have also developed a germfree chicken model to analyze the chicken microbiome.
Within the lab, we maintain an Illumina Miseq for shotgun metagenome sequencing and whole genome sequencing of bacteria. We have also standardized Oxford Nanopore long read sequencing to complement the Illumina short read platform.
